DOAM Foundation held the second edition of its Read to Succeed Essay competition among pupils of Ikota Primary School, Lekki Expressway. The competition was held on July 14, 2014, while the prize giving day was held on July 21, 2014.
Thirty (30) pupils from primary 4 to 6, participated at the event. The best ten pupils were selected from each class. The topic of the essay was; “what is the name of your favorite book in the library and what did you learn after reading the book”.
The essay competition aims to further spur and encourage the pupils of the school to use the library as often as possible. So far, the impact of the library usage has been very impressive as most of the kids attest to the fact that there are so many fun books to read and explore, they kids are also allowed to borrow the books home and they return them after reading.
The essay competition is proof that the children actually read the books in the library, as it was evident in their various essays.
At the prize giving day, some of the kids expressed their desire to work hard towards the next competition coming up next year.
It would be recalled that in 2012, Ikota Primary School benefited from the Foundation’s Library Project. (Read to Succeed Library Project in partnership with Western Union Foundation, Western Union , Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Access Bank Plc and Diamond Bank Plc).
The Foundation between 2011 to 2013 have refurbished and equipped 8 public schools with befitting Libraries in Lagos, Edo, Imo and Abia States in Nigeria.
The objective of the read to succeed library project is to promote a book culture aimed at improving the reading and writing habits of pupils/students, in addition to developing their communication skills.
This project will address the core problem of poorly equipped libraries, making teaching difficult for teachers and opportunities for free-time reading which is almost non-existent for the pupils in these schools.
